Ingredients
Method
Gently form ground beef into four patties about 0.75 inch thick, making a slight depression in the center with your thumb. Season each patty generously with salt and black pepper just before cooking.
Preheat grill or skillet to medium-high heat (about 400°F). Lightly oil the grate or pan.
Place patties on the grill and cook for 3–4 minutes without moving them, until a crust forms. Flip once and cook another 2–3 minutes for medium (160°F internal temperature). Add cheese in the last minute and cover to melt.
Lightly toast the buns cut-side down on the grill for 1 minute, if desired.
Spread mayonnaise on the bottom bun, then mustard on the top. Layer bottom with lettuce, patty with melted cheese, tomato slices, pickles, and red onion.
Add a small dollop of ketchup to the top bun, place on the burger, and serve immediately.
