Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
In a small bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl, beat softened butter with both sugars until light and fluffy, about 2–3 minutes.
Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract and mix until combined.
Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, stirring until just combined. Do not overmix.
Fold in chocolate chips and walnuts (or your chosen mix-ins) with a spatula.
Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
Bake for 11–13 minutes, until edges are golden brown but centers still look slightly underdone.
Cool cookies on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
